Craigmillar Now, in partnership with Let the People Sing is delighted to present an exhibition of photographs by German photographer Toby Binder.
Toby’s work focuses on topics of post-war and crisis situations, and the everyday lives of people in their communities. In 2004, Toby came to the Craigmillar area to photograph local young people as part of his ‘Youth in the UK’ photo series.
This exhibition includes five of these images, and two images from his ‘Wee Muckers’ photo series, and the 2018 book of the same name taken in Belfast.

In 2024 Toby contacted Craigmillar Now to ask for our help to find some of the young people in his photographs, taken 20 years before in the Craigmillar area. As a thanks, he kindly sent us copies of the photographs for the archive. These photos are now being displayed.
Visiting the Exhibition
Youth of Craigmillar is being exhibited at The Bothy, a community recovery space in the heart of Craigmillar — created by people in recovery, for people in recovery. The Bothy was set up by a group of local residents with lived experience of addiction and recovery, who came together to build something better for their community. There are support groups running at The Bothy throughout the week. To respect the privacy of attendees and the sensitivity of this work, we ask visitors to please only attend the exhibition during the opening hours listed on this page.
Getting There
You can reach The Bothy at 92 Niddrie Mains Road on public transport, taking the 14, 30 or 2 bus from central Edinburgh.
Copyright of images belongs to Toby Binder. We would like to thank Toby for kindly allowing us to show his work and The Let The People Sing team for partnering with us on this exhibition.
