The Darkroom Garden

Thursdays
11am-1pm
at Craigmillar Now

*workshops will run once a month from January - March 2025

Get involved in an exciting new community project at Craigmillar Now! Led by photographer Zoe Hamill we’ll be learning new skills through photography workshops and developing our very own Darkroom Garden on the site of our community centre.

Come along to learn more about the project and make your own photo developer out of Christmas tree branches Thursday 16th January, 11am!

Why?

Photography is part of our everyday lives through smart phones and social media, making it an accessible entry point into visual art and an approachable way to empower and engage creativity for most audiences. Analogue photography in particular offers a hands-on, screen-free way of working that is immersive and meditative, offering all the benefits of mindfulness.

How?

  • Growing

Clearing, planting and maintaining a garden offers local community members the chance to learn these practical
skills and spend time with nature.

  • Making

Garden plants will be made to make photographic chemistry
that will then be used in photographic workshops, encouraging creativity.

  • Learning

We will research and implement systems to reduce
the projects’ environmental impact, such as harvesting rain-water, composting waste an reusing second-hand materials.

    Acessibility

There is a car park on site of Craigmillar Now and ramp access to the garden. Workshops will be held inside Craigmillar Now which is ground floor and accessible.

At present most of our flower beds are not wheelchair accessible and require volunteers to walk across unpaved surfaces to access plants. Garden tasks require lifting and bending but we will do our best to support volunteers if they wish to attend with accessibility requirements where possible.

Lunches

We host a free lunch for our volunteers and local community on Mondays 1-1:30pm. All welcome
